Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest and dry shrubland, dry savanna.

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Senegambia east to Somalia, south to northern Zaire, northern Uganda and central Kenya.

Subspecies
Often treated as conspecific with Southern White-faced Owl (Ptilopsis granti) but significant differences in DNA and vocal patterns, however, indicate that northern and southern populations specifically distinct. Pale birds in Sudan and dark ones elsewhere have been treated as racially distinct (as margarethae and nigrovertex, respectively), but both considered merely color morphs.
