Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, dry and moist savanna.

Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte dIvoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Clapperton's Francolin (Pternistis clappertoni), Heuglin's Francolin (Pternistis icterorhynchus) and Harwood's Francolin (Pternistis harwoodi). Has been included in genus Chaetopus. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Pternistis with 23 other species. Several subspecies proposed, but these are simply examples of both local and clinal variation within nominate bicalcaratus.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • ayesha (Hartert, 1917)   -  Western Morocco, from Rabat to Mogador.
  • bicalcaratus (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Senegambia east to south-western Chad and western Central African Republic.
  • ogilviegranti (Bannerman, 1922)   -  Southern Nigeria, southern Cameroon.
