Subspecies
Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Peliperdix with Coqui Francolin (Peliperdix coqui), White-throated Francolin (Peliperdix albogularis), Schlegel's Francolin (Peliperdix schlegelii) and Crested Francolin (Dendroperdix sephaena).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

lathami (Hartlaub, 1854) - Sierra Leone east to western Zaire and south to Cabinda, Angola.
schubotzi (Reichenow, 1912) - Western Zaire east to extreme south-western Sudan, western Uganda and extreme north-western Tanzania.
