Range (Guide)
Extreme eastern Uganda and adjacent highlands of western Kenya. Also central Angola, southern and south-eastern DRCongo, most of Zambia, north-east, western and southern Tanzania (southern from near Seast of L Victoria in western and from Songea and Liwale in south-east), Malawi and northern Mozambique (south to R Zambezi). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spotted Treecreeper (Salpornis spilonota).

Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spotted Treecreeper (Salpornis spilonota).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • emini Hartlaub, 1884   -  Gambia south to western Guinea, north-western Sierra Leone and northern Ivory Coast eastern discontinuously to northern Ghana, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, northern Cameroon, southern Chad (southern from Azoum/Chari confluence) and northern Central African Republic. Also southern Sudan, adjacent north-eastern DRCongo (north-eastern Uele) and extreme north-western Uganda. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spotted Treecreeper (Salpornis spilonota).
  • erlangeri Neumann, 1907   -  Western and south-eastern Ethiopian Highlands. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spotted Treecreeper (Salpornis spilonota).
  • salvadori (Bocage, 1878)   -  Extreme eastern Uganda and adjacent highlands of western Kenya. Also central Angola, southern and south-eastern DRCongo, most of Zambia, north-east, western and southern Tanzania (southern from near Seast of L Victoria in western and from Songea and Liwale in south-east), Malawi and northern Mozambique (south to R Zambezi). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spotted Treecreeper (Salpornis spilonota).
  • xylodromus Clancey, 1975   -  Northern and central Zimbabwe (Zambezi Escarpment and Mashonaland Plateau) and adjacent Mozambique (Manica platform south to R Save). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spotted Treecreeper (Salpornis spilonota).
