Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. This species has been considered to form a superspecies with Spot-crowned Euphonia (Euphonia imitans).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
fulvicrissa Sclater, 1857 - Central Panama (from Coclé and Colon on Caribbean side and Panamá on Pacific side) east to western Colombia (northern Chocó).
omissa Hartert, 1913 - Northern base of Colombian Andes from Antioquia east to north-western end of eastern Andes in Norte de Santander (including Sinú Valley, lower Cauca Valley and middle Magdalena Valley) and Pacific coast south to Cauca.
purpurascens Hartert, 1901 - South-western Colombia (Nariño) south to north-western Ecuador (Esmeraldas, Manabí and north-western Pichincha).
