Proposed subspecies bansoensis and wellsi (Banso Mts, western Cameroon) and insularis (Bioko) are indistinguishable from nominate; barakae (mountains of eastern Zaire) inseparable from taeniolaema.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

• tullbergi (Sjöstedt, 1892)   -  South-eastern Nigeria (Obudu Plateau), western Cameroon and Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
• taeniolaema Reichenow & Neumann, 1895   -  Extreme eastern Zaire and south-western and eastern Uganda to western Kenyan highlands, south to western Rwanda, Burundi and extreme western Tanzania (Mt Mahari). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Fine-banded Woodpecker (Campethera taeniolaema).
• hausburgi Sharpe, 1900   -  Kenya east of Rift Valley, also extreme northern Tanzania (Loliondo).
