North-eastern Zaire (area bordered by R Aruwimi, R Nepoko and R Semliki) and western and south-central Uganda (forests of Budongo, Bugoma and Mabira).

Estimated population is 50,000 - 99,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat loss through logging and clearance of forest for charcoal burning and agriculture, hunting for food, egg collection, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Formerly placed in monotypic genus Acentrortyx. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Pternistis with 23 other species.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Forest Francolin (Peliperdix lathami) which has a black throat and yellow legs, lacks red skin around eye.
