The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- nigropileus (Lafresnaye, 1840) - Western Ghats (Gujarat to Mysore) and Nilgiri Plateau of southern central India.
- simillimus Jerdon, 1839 - India, Sri Lanka.
- bourdilloni (Seebohm, 1881) - South-western India (Kerala).
- kinnisii (Blyth, 1851) - Hills of Sri Lanka.
- spencei Whistler & Kinnear, 1932 - Eastern Ghats (Madhya Pradesh to Seshachalam Hills) of eastern India.
