Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 1,300 - 2,700 m, occasionally 1,100 - 3,200 m.

Range (Guide)

Costa Rica, Panama.

Mountains of Costa Rica (from eastern Guanacaste and southern Alajuela) east to western Panama (Chiriqu�� and Veraguas).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Molecular-genetic data indicate that this species, Beryl-spangled Tanager (Tangara nigroviridis), Green-naped Tanager (Tangara fucosa) and Blue-and-black Tanager (Tangara vassorii) form a species group, with last-mentioned basal to the other three. Has been considered conspecific with Green-naped Tanager (Tangara fucosa), the two being similar in vocalizations, behaviour and habitat preference.
