Subspecies
Genetically most closely related to the two Middle American species Black-throated Shrike-tanager (Lanio aurantius) and White-throated Shrike-tanager (Lanio leucothorax). Replaced south of R Amazon by White-winged Shrike-tanager (Lanio versicolor). Original spelling has often been cited as "sulva", but this stems from typographical error in a later copy; original spelling is "fulva".
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
peruvianus Carriker, 1934 - Eastern base of Andes in western Venezuela (Táchira) south to southern and south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (south to northern bank of R Marañón and R Amazon in San Martín and Loreto).
fulvus (Boddaert, 1783) - South-eastern Venezuela (south of R Orinoco), the Guianas, and northern Brazil (north of R Amazon, east to Amapá).
