Family
Parulidae (New World Warblers)
Size
12 cm
First Described (Guide)
(Audubon, 1833)
Habitat
In breeding season in seasonally flooded swamp-forest, always near standing water, apparently showing a strong association with canebrakes of the bamboo Arundinaria gigantea. In winter, dry forest, wetlands and urban areas.
Cuba (E) (NB), USA (E) (B).
Vagrant to Bahamas (E).
Population
Estimated population is <50 (2010).
Status PE
Habitat loss through drainage of river-bottom swamplands, and the near-total clearance of canebrakes in the USA, combined with the conversion of much of Cuba to sugarcane plantation, is the main threat. The last (unconfirmed) sighting was in 1988.

Voice
Song is a buzzy, pulsating, insect-like trill, sometimes given in song flight. Call is a low, hissing 'zee e eep'.
