Subspecies
Genus for many years subsumed into Loxops, and later merged into Viridonia or an enlarged Hemignathus. Previously considered conspecific with Kauai Amakihi (Chlorodrepanis stejnegeri) and Oahu Amakihi (Chlorodrepanis flava).

Proposed subspecies kalaana (Molokai) and chloridoides (Lanai) not separable from wilsoni.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

wilsoni (Rothschild, 1893) - Molokai and Maui, in Hawaiian Is.
virens (Cabanis, 1851) - Hawaii I, in eastern Hawaiian Is.
