Subspecies
Thought to form a superspecies, or to be conspecific, with New Ireland Mannikin (Lonchura forbesi). Pohnpei subspecies minor, said to have been introduced in 1920s, but evidently endemic.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

minor (Yamashina, 1931) - Pohnpei, in Caroline Is.
nigerrima (Rothschild & Hartert, 1899) - New Hanover (Bismarck Archipelago). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, New Hanover Munia (Lonchura nigerrima).
hunsteini (Finsch, 1886) - New Ireland, in Bismarck Archipelago.
