Habits
In pairs or in flocks.

Food
Small seeds, mostly of grasses. Also other plant material and insects.

Voice
A high-pitched squeak, a sharp 'dup' and brisk chattering.

Nest
Bottle-shaped, bulky, composed of dried and green grasses, lined with feathers and fine grasses, in a small tree or bush.

Eggs (Guide)
4 - 6; pure white; oval; about 16 x 12 mm. Incubation: 13 - 14 days; by both sexes.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 15 - 17 days.

Subspecies
Appears to be closely related to Black-bellied Crimson Finch (Neochmia phaeton). Nominate subspecies and minor intergrade in eastern Queensland (from south of Cooktown south to Atherton Tableland). Proposed subspecies loftyi (described from Mt Lofty, in South Australia) is synonymized with nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • temporalis (Latham, 1801)   -  Coastal and subcoastal eastern Australia, from Atherton region, Qld, south and south-west to Mt Lofty Ranges and Kangaroo Island, SA and inland to the western slopes of the Great Divide.
  • minor (Campbell, AJ, 1901)   -  Coastal and subcoastal Cape York Peninsula, Qld, south to around Cape Melville and Cape Flattery in the east and to arround the lower reaches of the Mitchell River in the west.
