Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Introduced to Jamaica.

Eastern and southern DRCongo, south-western Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, southern Kenya, Tanzania, western and southern Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Namibia, and Zimbabwe and central and southern Mozambique south to northern and eastern Botswana, South Africa, Swaziland and lowlands of Lesotho.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Food
Mainly seeds and grain but also insects, especially when feeding young.

Voice
Displaying males utter a 'zik, zik, zik' note and a whining, wheezy 'tay-zatzayzaay'.

Nest
Composed of fine grass with an entrance near the top.

Eggs (Guide)
2 - 5, usually 3 but up to 7 have been recorded; pale greenish blue; oval; 20 x 14 mm. Incubation: 11 - 14 days; by female.

Young
Fledge in 13 - 16 days.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Has been regarded as forming a superspecies with Northern Red Bishop (Euplectes franciscanus) and Zanzibar Red Bishop (Euplectes nigroventris). Sometimes treated as conspecific with Northern Red Bishop (Euplectes franciscanus).

Proposed subspecies include, nigrifrons (described from Karema, on eastern shore of L Tanganyika, in Tanzania) and, in South Africa, turgidus (from Citrusdal, in western Western Cape) and sundevalli (from south-eastern Eastern Cape). However, this species varies clinally in size, with largest birds in south-western South Africa, and no populations constantly separable on basis of morphometrics or plumage characteristics.
