Southern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (Corrientes) and south-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais south to Rio Grande do Sul).

Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through intensive grazing, invasive grasses, annual burning and conversion to Eucalyptus, soybeans and exportable crops, conversion of grasslands to ricefields and increasing fire frequency, are the main threats.

Voice
A long series of warbled phrases in display flight, ending with repeated series of nasal 'iieeeerrrr' as the bird drops near-vertically.

Similar Species
Yellowish Pipit (Anthus lutescens) is smaller, barely tinged yellow and less boldly marked above. Hellmayr's Pipit (Anthus hellmayri) has fine breast streaking.
