(Grant, 1908)

Habitat
Open, grazed, level grassland without forb invasion, in high rainfall, sour grassland regions. Favouring stone-free areas of natural grassland on flat or gently-sloping hilltop plateaux, with short to medium grass cover, avoiding areas with tall, dense or insufficient grass cover.

Range (Guide)
South Africa (B) (NB).

North-eastern and eastern South Africa: isolated populations in south-eastern Mpumulanga, eastern Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape.
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 5,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat loss and fragmentation, to due agricultural intensification, inappropriate pasture management and afforestation, human settlement, mining, unsuitable fire regimes, predation by mongooses, rodents and snakes, are the main threats.

A cup covered with a dome, composed of old grass and lined with fresh dry grass.

Eggs (Guide)
Clutch Size: 2 - 4, usually 3
Incubation: 13 - 14 days

Young
Fledge: 13 days

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Forms a superspecies with Liben Lark (Heteromirafra archeri) and Sidamo Lark (Heteromirafra sidamoensis).

Similar Species
Spike-heeled Lark (Chersomanes albofasciata) which has a white tip to its short tail.
