Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, hot desert. From sea-level - 2,200 m.

Vagrant to Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Malta, Netherlands Antilles, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom, Yemen.
Unknown to Russia (Asian) (B).

Subspecies
Proposed subspecies theresae (described from Sind, in Pakistan) falls within range of individual variation of nominate, and is therefore synonymized with it. Form named as Sylvia ticehursti, described on basis of single specimen from southern Morocco (near Ouarzazate), and traditionally treated either as a separate species or as a subspecies of Tristram's Warbler (Sylvia deserticola), is most probably an aberrant individual of subspecies maroccana of Tristram's Warbler (Sylvia deserticola) (which it resembles in general structure and in tail and tertial patterns), or a hybrid between it and subspecies deserti of present species (which it resembles in having pale sandy-brown upperparts).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- nana (Ehrenberg, 1833) - Breeds from northern and eastern Caspian Sea coasts and central and north-eastern Iran east to southern Mongolia and north-western China. Non-breeding north-eastern Africa and Arabia east to north-western India.
- deserti (Loche, 1858) - Deserts of north-western Africa to eastern Libya. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, African Desert Warbler (Sylvia deserti).
