Subspecies
Sometimes placed in a separate genus, Neosuthora. Racial identity of birds in extreme northern Laos and extreme north-western part of western Tonkin (northern Vietnam) uncertain, but they are presumed to belong with thompsoni. Likewise, birds in northern (extreme eastern part) and central (north-eastern part) Laos and neighbouring Vietnam (northern Annam) are presumed to belong with tonkinensis. Individuals of this species found in southern Hunan and northern Guangdong (south-eastern China) are of unspecified subspecies. Further study is required.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
thompsoni (Bingham, 1903) - Southern part of eastern Myanmar, north-western and extreme northern Laos, extreme north-western Vietnam (extreme north-western Tonkin) and south-eastern part of north-western and adjacent north-eastern Thailand.
tonkinensis (Delacour, 1927) - North-eastern and north-central Laos and adjacent north-central Vietnam (northern Annam and eastern Tonkin).
davidianus (Slater, 1897) - Southern Zhejiang and northern Fujian, in eastern China.
