Subspecies
Subspecies rubiginosus is reported to intergrade with bohndorffi eastwards from Nigeria towards Central African Republic, in zone where precise distribution is unclear and very local. Central populations formerly known as haynesi but this name is a junior synonym of rubiginosus.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
atripennis (Swainson, 1837) - Gambia and Senegal south to Liberia.
rubiginosus (Blyth, 1865) - Southern Ivory Coast east to central and southern Nigeria and western Cameroon. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-crowned Capuchin Babbler (Phyllanthus rubiginosus).
bohndorffi (Sharpe, 1884) - Southern Central African Republic and north-eastern DRCongo east to south-western Uganda. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-caped Capuchin Babbler (Phyllanthus bohndorffi).
