Subspecies
Relationships obscure. Originally considered to be a greenbul (Pycnonotidae) and was assigned to a monotypic genus, Suaheliornis. Although placed by some authors in the superspecies formed by Grey Longbill (Macrosphenus concolor) and Pulitzer's Longbill (Macrosphenus pulitzeri), its larger size, longer tail and stouter bill set it apart from all of its current congeners.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • kretschmeri (Reichenow & Neumann, 1895)   -  North-eastern and eastern Tanzania: Mt Kilimanjaro, Moshi, and from Usambaras and Ngurus south to Ulugurus and Udzungwas (in Mwahihana and Magombera Forests), and on coast in forests of Kiono, Pugu, Kazimzumbwe and Kiwengome.
  • griseiceps Grote, 1911   -  South-eastern Tanzania (Mikandani) and northern Mozambique (Netia).
