Subspecies
Has been suggested that this species belongs in the sylviid genus Eremomela, but it shows affinities also to Black-throated Apalis (Apalis jacksoni).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
nigriceps (Shelley, 1873) - North-eastern Sierra Leone east to Gabon and south-western Central African Republic. Also Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
collaris van Someren, 1915 - Eastern DRCongo and Uganda.
