(Hodgson, 1837)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. Also heavily degraded former forest, arable land, moist shrubland.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos (B), Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Singly or in small groups. Forage in mid and upper canopy.

Food
Mainly insects but also figs.

Voice
Whistling notes, short, repated and variable.

Nest
A lined cavity in a tree.

Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Possibly closest to Sylviparus. With exception of isolated subspecies gayeti, subspecies intergrade widely.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • sultanea (Hodgson, 1837)   -  Eastern Himalayas from central Nepal to north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh south to Manipur and Mizoram), Myanmar, northern Thailand and southern China (western and southern Yunnan).
  • flavocristata (Lafresnaye, 1837)   -  Central and southern Thailand, Malay Peninsula and south-eastern China (Hainan I); possibly also Sumatra.
  • seorsa Bangs, 1924   -  Northern Indochina (south to central Laos) and south-eastern China (Guangxi, Fujian).
  • gayeti Delacour & Jabouille, 1925   -  South-central Vietnam (central Annam).
