Subspecies
Closely related to, and has been considered to form a superspecies with, Inca Wren (Pheugopedius eisenmanni), but differs markedly in song and (especially the subspecies geographically closest to Inca Wren (Pheugopedius eisenmanni)) in plumage. Neither species responds to playback of the other's song.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

euophrys (Sclater, 1860) - Western Andes of extreme southern Colombia (Nari�o) and Ecuador.
longipes (Allen, JA, 1889) - Eastern Andes of Ecuador.
atriceps Chapman, 1924 - North-western Peru (north-eastern Piura, Cajamarca).
schulenbergi (Parker, TA & O'Neill, 1985) - Northern Peru south of R Mara��n (Amazonas, San Mart��n). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-browed Wren (Pheugopedius schulenbergi).
