Subspecies
Geographical variation slight and mostly clinal; carlottae and godfreii possibly not tenable.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- meruloides (Swainson, 1832) - Alaska and north-western Canada. Non-breeding also south-western USA.
- naevius (Gmelin, 1789) - South-eastern Alaska south to north-western California.
- carlottae (Phillips, AR, 1991) - Queen Charlotte Is, in British Columbia (south-western Canada).
- godfreii (Phillips, AR, 1991) - Interior British Columbia south to north-western USA (Idaho, Montana).
