Subspecies
Generic name in original description spelt as "Ptiliogonys", apparently in error by author, who had earlier described the genus by its current name (which he subsequently used) in what seems to have been an unpublished manuscript. This species may form a superspecies with Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher (Ptiliogonys caudatus).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
otofuscus Moore, RT, 1935 - North-western Mexico.
cinereus Swainsn, 1827 - Central and eastern Mexico.
pallescens Griscom, 1934 - South-western Mexico.
molybdophanes Ridgway, 1887 - Southern Mexico (Chiapas) and western Guatemala.
