Subspecies
Genus sometimes subsumed in Malaconotus or in Chlorophoneus. Has also been placed in Dryoscopus and Laniarius. May be closely allied with Olive Bush-Shrike (Chlorophoneus olivaceus). A specimen from Entebbe (Uganda), named as Chlorophoneus andaryae, was probably a hybrid with Sulphur-breasted Bush-Shrike (Telophorus sulfureopectus).
Proposed subspecies ansorgei (described from N'dalatando, in north-western Angola), supposedly with slightly paler back, treated as synonym of nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
bocagei (Reichenow, 1894) - South-eastern Nigeria (Obudu Plateau) and southern Cameroon south to north-western Angola.
jacksoni (Sharpe, 1901) - North-eastern and south-central DRCongo, Uganda and western Kenya.
