Subspecies
This genus and Loboparadisea sometimes united in a separate family, Cnemophilidae. Species sometimes placed in a monotypic genus, Loria. Sympatric with Yellow Satinbird (Cnemophilus macgregorii) at about 2600 m on Mt Hagen and 2,200 - 2,650 m in Ambua Range, but hybridization unrecorded.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
inexpectatus (Salvadori, 1894) - Western and central ranges (including Weyland, Nassau, Oranje, Hindenberg and Victor Emanuel Mts) of New Guinea.
amethystinus (Stresemann, 1934) - Schraderberg, Wahgi Divide, Bismarck Range, Kubor Range, Mt Hagen and Giluwe Range (also, presumably, Mt Bosavi) in eastern New Guinea.
loriae (Salvadori, 1894) - Herzog and Kuper ranges (east of Watut/Tauri Gap) Seast through Owen Stanley Range to Mt Dayman, in south-eastern New Guinea.
