Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
brachyrhynchos Brehm, 1822 - Southern Canada from south-western Northwest Territories east to Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, and south throughout Midwest and eastern USA to at least north-western Florida and Gulf of Mexico, expanding west through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Nevada and central Arizona.
hesperis Ridgway, 1887 - South-western Canada (interior British Columbia) south in western USA to Washington, northern Idaho, Oregon and California, and extreme north-western Mexico (extreme north-western Baja California).
pascuus Coues, 1899 - Peninsular Florida.
hargravei Phillips, AR, 1942 - West-central USA.
paulus Howell, 1913 - Eastern and south-eastern US.
