Subspecies
Forms a species pair, and previously regarded as conspecific, with White-naped Jay (Cyanocorax cyanopogon). It has also been suggested that the two form a superspecies with Tufted Jay (Cyanocorax dickeyi).
Proposed subspecies interpositus (described from Alagoas, in north-eastern Brazil) seems to be based on a female of White-naped Jay (Cyanocorax cyanopogon) in worn subadult plumage, but possibly a valid taxon.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
diesingii Pelzeln, 1856 - Northern Brazil in extreme eastern Amazonas (right bank of lower R Madeira) and on southern side of Amazon in western Pará (lower R Tapajós).
insperatus Pinto & Camargo, 1961 - Western Pará (restricted to eastern lower R Tapajós, Serra do Cachimbo), in north-central Brazil.
chrysops (Vieillot, 1818) - Northern, eastern and south-eastern Bolivia (Beni, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca and Tarija), south-eastern Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul and Sío Paulo south to Rio Grande do Sul), Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (south to Chaco and Entre Ríos) and north-western Uruguay.
tucumanus Cabanis, 1883 - North-western Argentina (Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca and La Rioja).
