Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pachycephala cinerea, Green-backed Whistler (Pachycephala albiventris) and Island Whistler (Pachycephala phaionota). Often treated as conspecific with Pachycephala cinerea and Green-backed Whistler (Pachycephala albiventris).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
homeyeri (Blasius, 1890) - Mindanao and Sulu Is (Jolo, Tawi-Tawi, Sanga Sanga, Bongao, Sipangkot, Sibutu, Simunul), in southern and south-western Philippines. Also Siamil I, off north-eastern Borneo.
winchelli (Bourns & Worcester, 1894) - West-central Philippines (Tablas, Sibuyan, Masbate, Ticao, Panay, Gigantes, Pan de Azucar, Negros).
major (Bourns & Worcester, 1894) - Cebu (south-central Philippines).
