Subspecies
May be most closely related to Yellow-winged Vireo (Vireo carmioli). More study needed. Very wide divergence between coastal nominate subspecies and interior stephensi, indicating effective genetic separation of sufficiently long standing to raise the question of distinction at species level. Further study is required.

Proposed subspecies insularis, described from Victoria, on Vancouver I (British Columbia), in Canada, is synonymized with obscurus.

The following 13 subspecies are recognised:

  • obscurus Anthony, 1891   -  Extreme south-western Canada (south-western British Columbia) southern in western USA to north-western California.
  • parkesi Rea, 1991   -  North-western California (south to Marin County).
  • sierrae Rea, 1991   -  Northern and central Sierra Nevada, in eastern California.
  • huttoni Cassin, 1851   -  Western California from Monterey southern along coast to Santa Barbara County, also Santa Rosa I and Santa Cruz I.
  • unitti Rea, 1991   -  Santa Catalina I (south-western California).
  • cognatus Ridgway, 1903   -  Southern Baja California, in western Mexico.
  • stephensi Brewster, 1882   -  South-western USA (central and eastern Arizona, south-western New Mexico) southern in Sierra Madre to Zacatecas, in central Mexico.
  • carolinae Brandt, HW, 1938   -  Southern USA (south-western Texas) and eastern Mexico (south to south-central Zacatecas and north-western Hidalgo).
  • pacificus Phillips, AR, 1966   -  South-western Mexico (Nayarit south to south-western Jalisco).
