Subspecies
This genus and Hylophilus sometimes placed together in a subfamily Vireoninae. Placed by some authors in a monotypic genus, Neochloe, because of its atypically rounded tail and highly distinctive plumage, quite unlike that of all other vireos. Subspecies browni considered poorly differentiated by some authorities.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
brevipennis (Sclater, PL, 1858) - Central Mexico from Jalisco and Colima east to Morelos, Veracruz and Oaxaca.
