Habits
Singly or in twos, occasionally in small family parties.

Food
Insects procured in the air, on the ground or among foliage.

Voice
A single or double squeak, like that of the Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons). Hard, peevish notes. A soft chirring trill. A harsh scolding 'scairr'.

Nest
Cup-shaped, composed of grass and rootlets, bound with cobweb, lined with small dead leaves and decorated on the outside with lichen, moss, and leaves, usually in a low vine, up to 6 - 7 meters above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
2; lustrous, pale green freckled with yellow-brown to chestnut, intermingled with grey spots, partucularly at the larger end where a zone may be formed; oval; about 20 x 16 mm. Incubation: probably by female.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 15 - 19 days. Fed by both parents and helpers.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • capito (Gould, 1852)   -  Central-eastern Australia, east of the Great Divide, from Blackall - Conondale Ranges and Bunya Mts, south-eastern Qld, south to the Hunter River, NSW.
  • nana (Ramsay, EP, 1878)   -  North-eastern Qld, east of the Great Divide, from Big Tableland - Mt Amos, south to Paluma Range.
