Insects and nectar.

Voice
A squeaky 'chip-chew, chippy-chew'. A quick 'chip' or 'hiccup'. A 'twee-ee-twee-ee' uttered in flight. A raipd 'hee-hee-hee' uttered in alarm.

Nest
Open, cup-shaped, composed of strips of bark, grasses and twigs, lined with plant-down, placed in a banksia or other dense shrub, 1 m or so above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
1 - 3, usually 2; pale buff with pink or red-brown spots at the larger end; oval; about 21 x 15 mm. Incubation: 14 - 15 days; by female.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 12 - 14 days. Fed by both parents.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • niger (Bechstein, 1811)   -  Eastern Australia on and east of Great Divide, from north-eastern Queensland (Mt Windsor Tableland Southern, inland to Wongabel, Ravenshoe and upper reaches of Burdekin R, to Paluma Range) and, disjunctly, from Eungella National Park (inland from Mackay) south to south-eastern New South Wales (Illawarra region to Shoalhaven R).
  • gouldii (Schlegel, 1872)   -  Coastal and subcoastal south-western Australia from Murchison R south to Esperance-Israelite Bay, occasionally east to Eyre Bird Observatory (50 km south of Cocklebiddy).


Similar Species
New Holland Honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae) (especially juveniles) which have a dark face, lacking a large which cheek patch, have a white eye and white tips to the outer tail feathers.
