No subspecies.

Not recognised as a species by BirdLife International.

Genus closely related to Macgregoria. The fleshy wattle of this species provides a morphological link between the two. Forms a superspecies with Spangled Honeyeater (Melipotes ater), Smoky Honeyeater (Melipotes fumigatus) and Arfak Honeyeater (Melipotes gymnops).
