Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also subtropical and tropical lowland moist shrubland, heavily degraded former forest and plantations. From sea-level to 600 m.

Range (Guide)

Indonesia (B).

Morotai, Halmahera and, probably, Bacan, in northern Moluccas.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Forest habitat loss and agricultural development are the main threats.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Forms a superspecies with Seram Friarbird (Philemon subcorniculatus), Black-faced Friarbird (Philemon moluccensis), Philemon plumigenis, Helmeted Friarbird (Philemon buceroides), New Britain Friarbird (Philemon cockerelli), New Ireland Friarbird (Philemon eichhorni) and White-naped Friarbird (Philemon albitorques). Formerly suggested that all may belong to a single species, or that present species may be conspecific with first three of these.

Similar Species
The Halmahera Oriole (Oriolus phaeochromus) is almost identical, but smaller, with blunter bill, darker underparts and without bare pinkish skin around eye.
