Habits
Singly or in pairs, although quite a few may congregate at flowering trees.

Food
Insects, nectar, native fruits and berries.

Voice
Extremely high, clear, sharp, almost scratchy notes, often preceded by low, abrupt, 'tchup' sounds, 'tchup, tchup, chwiep-chiep-cheep-chip-a-wiep'.

Nest
Deeply cup-shaped, composed of grey-green moss, lined with fine fibers, placed in a rainforest tree, about 3 m above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
2; buff-cream, blotched brown at the larger end; oval; 22 x 16 mm. Incubation: possibly 12 - 14 days.

Young
Fed by both parents. Fledge in about 14 - 15 days.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Genus often subsumed in Meliphaga. Present species sometimes placed in Oreornis. Forms a distinctive species group with Black-throated Honeyeater (Caligavis subfrenata), Obscure Honeyeater (Caligavis obscura), Bridled Honeyeater (Bolemoreus frenatus) and Yellow-faced Honeyeater (Caligavis chrysops), and all sometimes combined in a separate genus, Caligavis. Formerly considered to be an outlying population of Bridled Honeyeater (Bolemoreus frenatus).
