Racial affinities of birds from central Bolivian Yungas in Cochabamba uncertain and tentatively included in subspecies argentina.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • maximiliani (D'Orbigny, 1835)   -  Yungas of western Bolivia (La Paz).
  • argentina (Hellmayr, 1907)   -  Central Bolivia (Yungas of Cochabamba, and from western Santa Cruz) southern on Andean slopes to north-western Argentina (south to western Córdoba and northern San Luis).
  • pallida Nores & Yzurieta, 1980   -  South-eastern Bolivia, and lowland Chaco of western Paraguay and northern Argentina (from eastern Formosa south to Córdoba).
