Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
intermedius (Ridgway, 1884) - Caribbean slope from eastern Honduras south to western Panama.
lizanoi (Cherrie, 1891) - Pacific slope in southern Costa Rica (formerly east to western Chiriquí, in Panama).
perspicillatus (Lawrence, 1861) - Panama (from Veraguas and Coclé) east to north-western Colombia (northern Chocó).
pallidior Todd, 1919 - Colombia in valleys of upper R Sinú, lower R Cauca and middle R Magdalena.
periophthalmicus (Salvadori & Festa, 1898) - Pacific slope from western Colombia (Baudo Mts, in Chocó) south to to north-western Ecuador.
