Eastern Argentina (Santa Fe and Entre Ríos south to Río Negro and southern Buenos Aires), extreme south-eastern Brazil (south-eastern Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay.

Status NT
Aaccelerating loss of suitable grassland through drainage and conversion to cultivation and urban areas is the main threat.

Plumage similarities have suggested to some authors that this and Austral Canastero (Asthenes anthoides) are sister-species. Others suggest that sister-taxon is Puna Canastero (Asthenes sclateri).
