Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Olrog's Cinclodes (Cinclodes olrogi). However, plumage similarities suggest that it may be most closely related to Dark-bellied Cinclodes (Cinclodes patagonicus) or to the superspecies formed by Surf Cinclodes (Cinclodes taczanowskii) and Seaside Cinclodes (Cinclodes nigrofumosus).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
oustaleti Scott, 1900 - Chile (Antofagasta south to Aisén) and western Argentina (Mendoza south to western Chubut).
baeckstroemii Lönnberg, 1921 - Juan Fernández Is, off central Chile.
hornensis Dabbene, 1917 - Breeds on Desolación I (southern Chile), Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn Archipelago; some migrate north to southern Argentina and central Chile.
