Subspecies
Similar to other members of genus in morphology, vocalizations and behaviour. Subspecies possibly constitute more than one species, while some appear to represent no more than clinal or individual plumage variation. Also, possibly distinct but undescribed populations may exist within geographical ranges of subspecies listed. Taxonomic study is needed. Population south of R Amazon in Pará and northern Mato Grosso currently included in nominate subspecies, but considered by some to be part of angustirostris. Conversely, that on northern bank between R Japurá and R Negro placed with latter, but possibly closer to nominate. Birds from central Brazil and northern Bolivia described as subspecies griseigula, but appear to intergrade with nominate with no clear boundary and considered better synonymized with latter.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • angustirostris (Cabanis, 1849)   -  Southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolívar), the Guianas and Brazil north of R Amazon (northern bank between R Japurá and R Negro, also northern Roraima east to Amapá).
  • erythrophrys (Sclater, PL, 1855)   -  Southern or eastern slope of Andes in north-western Venezuela (Lara, Táchira, Barinas, Apure) and Colombia (except south of R Putumayo).
  • koenigorum O'Neill & Parker, TA, 1997   -  Central Peru (upper Huallaga Valley, in Huánuco).
  • leucophrys (Tschudi, 1844)   -  Extreme southern Colombia (south of R Putumayo), eastern Ecuador (on or near eastern slope of Andes), eastern Peru (in northern only on or near eastern slope and also east of R Ucayali), southern Amazonian Brazil (east to R Madeira, also in Pará from both banks of R Tapajós east to R Tocantins, south to Acre, Rondônia and south-western and northern Mato Grosso) and north-eastern Bolivia (Pando, La Paz, Beni, Cochabamba).
