Locally in southern Amazonian Brazil (Acre, south-western Amazonas, northern Mato Grosso, southern Pará), south-eastern Peru (Madre de Dios and adjacent southern Ucayali and eastern Cuzco) and north-western Bolivia (Pando, La Paz).

Subspecies
Probably a sister-species to the proposed "Jet Antbird (Cercomacra nigricans) group". Vocalizations possibly vary geographically. Analysis of populations needed in order to determine whether taxonomic revision required.
