South-eastern Brazil from central and south-eastern Bahia, eastern Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo south to eastern Sío Paulo, eastern Paraná and eastern Santa Catarina.

Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through urbanisation, industrialisation, agricultural expansion, colonisation and associated road-building, is the main threat.

Subspecies
Members of genus form a well-defined clade, and appear to be closely related to Hypocnemis. Most closely related to Rufous-tailed Antbird (Drymophila genei).
