Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Alagoas Antwren (Myrmotherula snowi) and formerly treated as conspecific. Also appears to be closely related to Andean Plain-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula behni) and Ashy Antwren (Myrmotherula grisea). The four have together been termed the "Plain-winged Myrmotherula group". This group often combined with White-flanked Antwren (Myrmotherula axillaris), Slaty Antwren (Myrmotherula schisticolor), Rio Suno Antwren (Myrmotherula sunensis), Salvadori's Antwren (Myrmotherula minor), Ihering's Antwren (Myrmotherula iheringi), Rio de Janeiro Antwren (Myrmotherula fluminensis), Long-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula longipennis), Band-tailed Antwren (Myrmotherula urosticta) and Grey Antwren (Myrmotherula menetriesii) as the "grey antwren assemblage", although this grouping possibly not monophyletic.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
All sympatric Myrmotherula have pale tips to coverts. Female Salvadori's Antwren (Myrmotherula minor) has indistinct pale buff covert tips, but is less rufescent above with grey crown, brighter underparts and shorter tail.
