Collared Antshrike (Thamnophilus bernardi) [XC513930]
by Fabrice Schmitt from Reserva Natural La Ceiba (Zapotillo - Loja) Balsa Real, Ecuador (call, song)
Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Black-crested Antshrike (Sakesphorus canadensis) and Silvery-cheeked Antshrike (Sakesphorus cristatus). Some plumage differences among Pacific slope populations are inconstant and others appear to be clinal. Diagnostic differences of described subspecies piurae and cajamarcae (south-western Ecuador, north-western Peru) not discernible, and those forms are therefore merged with nominate, pending further study.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
bernardi (Lesson, 1844) - West-central and south-western Ecuador (Manabí, Guayas including Puna I, El Oro, Loja) and north-western and north-central Peru (Pacific slope in Tumbes and Piura south to northern Ancash).
shumbae (Carriker, 1934) - North-central Peru (R Marañón drainage in Cajamarca and Amazonas). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Maranon Antshrike (Thamnophilus shumbae).
