Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Golden-headed Manakin (Ceratopipra erythrocephala ) and Red-headed Manakin (Ceratopipra rubrocapilla ).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
mentalis Sclater, 1857 - From south-eastern Mexico (southern Veracruz) south, on Caribbean slope, to eastern Costa Rica.
ignifera (Bangs, 1901) - Panama, mainly on Caribbean side.
minor (Hartert, 1898) - Western Colombia and western Ecuador.
