Habitat
Ravines, forested streams of cloud forests of the Andes. From 500 - 2,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Habits
Generally shy and inconspicuous.

Food
Mainly of fruit and insects. Also small vertebrates such as frogs or lizards.

Composed of mud, located on rocky outcrops or at entrances to caves.

Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • peruvianus (Latham, 1790)   -  Central Peru (southern San Martín south to Junín).
  • aequatorialis Taczanowski 1889   -  Andes of western Venezuela (north-western Barinas, Táchira), central and eastern Andes of Colombia, and eastern slope in Ecuador and Peru (south to Amazonas and northern San Martín).
  • sanguinolentus Gould, 1859   -  Western Andes of Colombia and north-western Ecuador.
  • saturatus Cabanis & Heine, 1860   -  South-eastern Peru and western Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
