Subspecies
Geographically isolated subspecies boliviana rather distinctive, may represent a separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
flavirostris Vieillot, 1816 - South-eastern Brazil (from central Bahia, southern Goiás, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo south to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
boliviana Chapman, 1930 - Foothills of Andes in western Bolivia (vicinity of Apolo, in La Paz). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Apolo Cotinga (Phibalura boliviana).
